  • PayPal Premier? Personal? Business? - Differences? Which is best for EBAY selling

Some claim that a PayPal personal account will not be asked for a social security number. While this may be true, a personal PP account has a very low monthly limit on it for credit card transactions, uselessly low for most purposes.

And if you want to use your PP with EBAY: the moment you receive a credit card payment EBAY will force you to change over to a premier or business PayPal:

    Security Measure
Sellers must have a Premier or Business PayPal Account or be willing to upgrade from a Personal PayPal Account to a Premier or Business Account upon receipt of a card funded payment.

Editor's Note: the newest rule is that a PayPal personal account cannot be used at all for EBAY sales.

Years ago I used to be able to have multiple paypal accounts in the same name - can this be done now - for instance can I have a personal, premier and business account all with the same information ?

For quite a while now, you're allowed to have just ONE personal account and then just ONE other PayPal account (either a Premier or a Business) under the same identifying information.

      PAYPAL USER AGREEMENT
2.2 Personal, Premier and Business Accounts. We offer three different types of Accounts: Personal, Premier and Business Accounts. You may only hold one Personal Account and either one Premier or one Business Account. By opening a Premier or Business Account and accepting the terms as outlined in this Agreement, you attest that you are not establishing the Account primarily for personal, family, or household purposes.

          Is the following true ??

Personal PayPal accounts, where all payments except those funded by credit card, are free for the receiver. However, beginning June 3, 2009, personal PayPal accounts will no longer going to be available for use by anyone who sales goods or services no matter the amount. If you sell a $1 item then you must convert your personal PayPal account to a commercial account and pay fees on all transactions no matter the funding source used. This is a major change and many very small or part-time online sellers won't see this one coming.

A personal paypal account has never been of much use to any of us here, because we sell sell sell! a LOT.

Who wrote the above sentence? (However, beginning June 3, 2009, personal PayPal accounts will no longer going to be available for use by anyone who sales goods or services no matter the amount.) Sounds like some moron who does not know the difference between the word "sells" and "sales," and I doubt PayPal wrote the above sentence.

The correct amendment to the policy is:

Beginning June 3, 2009 PayPal user agreement is being amended as follows:

            1. Section 4.2 of the user agreement will read as follows:

            1.

“4.2 Receiving Payments for Commercial Transactions and Personal Transactions.a. Fees depend on whether you are making a commercial transaction or a personal transaction. A commercial transaction involves buying and selling goods or services, and payments received when you send a “request money” using PayPal. A personal transaction involves sending money to and receiving money from friends and family without making a purchase.

            b. If you are selling goods or services, you may not ask the buyer to send you a personal payment for the purchase. If you do so, PayPal may remove your ability to accept personal payments.”

            2. Section 8 of the user agreement will read as follows:

            1.

            8. Fees. All fees are in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated.

Fees depend on whether you are making a commercial transaction or a personal transaction. A commercial transaction involves buying and selling goods or services, and payments received when you send a “request money” using PayPal. A personal transaction involves sending money to and receiving money from friends and family without making a purchase.

Personal Transactions. Fees depend on the payment source that the sender selects. The amount of the fee will be shown at the time the payment is sent. The Fee is paid by either the sender or the recipient. The sender decides who pays.

All this means is that with a PayPal personal account all sales transactions will result in a fee being charged.

You are allowed one personal and one either business or premier PP account. Since now a personal cannot even be used with EBAY, basically you are allowed one PP account only for purposes of EBAY.

PayPal personal accounts are actually now being allowed by EBAY to sell in some countries, but with a Personal PayPal account, you may accept payments from your buyers with no problem only if those payments come from the buyer's PayPal balance or from their bank account.

If the buyer pays you using funds from his credit/debit card, you'll have to either accept or refuse it and you are only allowed to accept two card-funded payments per year (after that, you have to upgrade to a Premier or Business account).

These are the general rules as far as a personal account.

As noted above in my prior post all PURCHASE related payments will incur fees:
                  Fee Structure - PayPal
but Personal Transfers are fee free, if they come from the buyer's balance or bank account.

This is the latest chart on the difference between Personal, Premier, and Business accounts:
                  PayPal Account Types - PayPal
and you will notice that all three accept credit or debit cards. It's just that PP forces you to upgrade from personal to premier if you receive too many credit/debit card payments.

                    Has this information been updated?

I believe sometime last year I called into Pp to see if we can have more than one business account and they said that it would be allowed as long as this the accounts are not selling the same product. Or if you operate warehouses in different locations it's ok as well to have multi pp business accounts.

                    Can someone confirm this??

Nothing has changed as far as written policy:

Help Centre - PayPal - PayPal

Can I have multiple PayPal accounts?

Yes. You can hold up to two PayPal accounts at any time in the following combinations:

                      * One personal account and one premier account.
                      * One personal account and one business account.
                      * One premier account and one business account.

Each account must have its own email address and bank account.

Help Center - PayPal - PayPal

Can I have multiple PayPal accounts?

Yes. You can have one Personal account and one Premier or Business account. You can add more email addresses, debit or credit cards, and bank accounts to your account, but each account must have its own email address and financial information. You can also upgrade your Personal account to a Premier or Business account.

That's the official answer. There is some anecdotal evidence that PayPal in the U.S. will allow multiple business accounts if each one is a verified entity and has its own EIN. But, this must be done either completely above board with PayPal's consent, or done completely Stealth so that they do not know you have the multiple accounts (and do not link them).

What is interesting is that most payment processors do not allow you to process multiple products through the same credit card processing account. In other words, if you are selling, say, products manufactured by one company of yours (say, iPhone covers), and then are also selling something unrelated, say, children's toys, most processors will force you to open a separate account - with separate monthly fees (most processors have a minimum per month charge) - for the two entities.

PayPal and places like Google Checkout just don't care. You may sell whatever through them, even if completely unrelated and from different websites. There are key differences though:

and there are also key differences between all credit card processors.
