  • Switchover from Washington Mutual to Chase - problematic

As anyone in California knows, Washington Mutual was bought out by Chase, and over the last year or so WAMU branches have gradually been switching over to the Chase name.

I made a cash deposit on Friday, October 23rd, at a Chase branch in California, and while it showed up over the weekend on my online banking, by today it had disappeared!

Luckily I still had the deposit receipt from the teller. I had to call my branch, the branch where I made the deposit, and FAX the slip over. They are giving me a temporary credit while they research the matter.

Supposedly the issue is that Friday was the day that WAMU's computers were officially switching over to Chase, and problems were rampant. I wish that sort of thing had happened on New Year's 1999, and my casino markers at that time had as well "fallen through the cracks." Oh vell.

It's funny but today TWO credits appeared in my bank account for this deposit. I wonder if I'll get to keep both. :-)

Another issue that eventually developed was that Chase in California eliminated all the free checking accounts that had been grandfathered in for Washington Mutual customers. No more free checking at Chase.

Also, I do believe that the PayPal debit card now incurs additional fees (besides the dollar that PayPal charges at its end) for ATM use at Chase. Using a PayPal debit card at Chase locations was fee free until just a couple of months ago.
